Here are a few steps you can take to prevent your toilet from from overflowing:
1. Identify the problem
If the toilet is overflowing there may be an obstruction in the drain pipe or a problem with the flushing mechanism. Understanding the cause can help you address the issue appropriately.
2. Stop the water flow
Locate the water shut-off valve near the base of the toilet and turn it clockwise to close it. This valve should stop the flow of water from the supply line to the toilet tank.
3. Remove the tank lid
Please remove the cover from the toilet tank and place it to the side. This will give you access to the inside of the tank.
4. Check the flapper valve
Inspect the flapper valve located at the bottom of the tank. If it’s stuck open gently push it back into place stopping water from entering the toilet bowl.
5. Lift the float
Look for the float in the toilet top. It’s this little plastic thing that floats on top of the water inside the tank. Lift it up, and that’ll stop any more water from filling up the toilet and causing a flood.
6. Plunge the toilet
If there’s no obvious problem in the tank the blockage may be in the pipe itself. Use a toilet plunger to create a seal around the drain hole at the bottom of the toilet bowl and then vigorously plunge up and down to help dislodge the blockage.
7. Use a plumbing snake
If plunging doesn’t work, a plumbing snake can be helpful. Insert the snake into the toilet drain and use a clockwise motion while pushing it forward. This can help break up and remove any clogs.
